A consortium of developers has been awarded the contract to build Thames Gateway's water plant, Building has reported.
Interserve, Atkins Water and Spanish firm Acciona will build a desalination plant to provide the capital's mixture of commercial property and residential buildings with clean water.
The chairman of Interserve, Adrian Ringrose said it has a "long and successful association with Thames Water" and is aware of the "key strategic part this plant will play in providing its customers with a long-term, high-quality water supply".
The proposed plant has caused some controversy and objectors have claimed it will be a pollutant and only a temporary solution to water shortages.
Environmental publication, Down to Earth, has documented the Green Party's objection to the plant.
"Building the desalination plant is the kind of short cut which we have come to expect from Thames Water," it reported Darren Johnson, Green Party member of the London Assembly, as saying.
