The first phase of construction of a new move that will allow 50 per cent more containers to enter through a London port has been awarded to a joint venture.
Laing O'Rourke and Dredging International won the £400 million contract to construct the beginning phase of the London Gateway project.
When completed, the move will allow the port to be the most productive and efficient in the world.
According to Supply Chain Digital, Simon Moore, the chief executive of London Gateway said that contract was a "major milestone" in the move to update the port.
Residents in the area have said that they want to see new vibrant neighbourhoods in the Thames Gateway, which will also see regeneration.
It is hoped that 12,000 jobs will be generated in the area around Stanford-le-Hope, and construction is expected to begin on the 1,850 acre site later this year, with a view to the first ships arriving a year before the London Olympics in 2012.
