The economic downturn could be good for green building, a survey carried out by law firm Taylor Wessing has claimed.
According to the company's report Behind the Green Facade, tenants will prefer buildings with green credentials and would be prepared to pay a premium in rental fees.
The report quizzed more than 5,450 professionals and revealed that since the credit crunch, business leaders have become more aware of environmental issues.
Helen Garthwaite, head of construction and engineering at Taylor Wessing, told the Green Building Press firms are realising decisive action on sustainability "may actually stimulate economic activity and job creation".
"This report reveals that far from putting the brakes on sustainable building, industry leaders could actually be using the economic downturn as an opportunity to boost their green credentials in preparation for proposed legislative developments in the area," she noted.
Tenants of the most recent commercial property builds should receive lower energy bills. This is thanks to developers' use of insulated glass and photovoltaic cells in commercial property construction.
