The Institute of Civil Engineers has warned that enormous amounts of energy are being wasted in the course of electricity generation that could be recycled by businesses.
The study's advice has significant implications for London’s existing office space and new commercial property planning because if implemented by lawmakers it would require a radically different model of producing power.
Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants capture heat that would be lost by traditional power stations and recycle it. However, this means that power generation is carried out on a far more local, decentralised level, with smaller power stations in high-occupancy business and residential areas.
ICE Energy Panel member Dr. Keith Tovey said, "The truth is, that if half of the heat lost during electricity production could be captured it would meet 25 per cent of the UK’s heat demand, dramatically reducing energy consumption, cutting costs and carbon emissions."
