Green city offices make economic sense, says lender Initiatives that improve offices' energy savings make economic sense, the Ecology Building Society has said.

A spokesperson for the organisation likened cutting back on green initiatives to reducing advertising spending.

She explained this was because "more often than not green measures, and particularly energy efficiency and energy saving measures, have a long-term financial benefit".

"Energy saving is an extremely pertinent issue, and in the context of the current financial setting, is something that makes economic sense. It does offer cost savings," she went on.

Offices in London can reduce their emissions by switching to low-energy light bulbs, managing their IT resources and turning off un-used lighting.

New commercial property builds can take environmental initiatives a stage further and integrate photovoltaics - to capture solar energy, heat recovery systems and low water use appliances, she advised.

Environmental advice publication BusinessGreen.com has said that a growing number of firms are investing in green IT to cut utility costs.
