HSBC has installed solar panels on the roof of its landmark tower in Canary Wharf, it has been reported.
The bank now claims to be the tallest HQ in Europe to adopt the alternative energy source, which covers 617 m sq.
The new photovoltaic panels can create enough power for 20 homes a year.
Made by electronics manufacturer, Sharp, the panels are designed to withstand winds of up to 140 miles per hour.
A spokeswoman for the bank told environmental website Business Green the installation was part of the company's wider environmental policy.
HSBC has claimed it is trialing new technologies to reduce energy and water consumption and waste and carbon dioxide generation.
"These innovations will engage staff, suppliers, contractors and customers throughout HSBC's 10,000 global buildings," it said.
Commercial property designs are increasingly adopting micro-generation technologies to help offset their carbon footprint.
