Home working could impact commercial property market

Analysts are predicting that the number of people working from home will increase significantly in the recession, which could have a knock on effect on the commercial property market.

Cutting office space costs by outsourcing some of their load to home-based workers is seen by some businesses as a way of reducing overheads, and many London commercial property landlords fear that the trend may even persist after the end of the recession as people get used to telecommuting.

However, this change in strategy could mean a boost for serviced offices in London as home workers often decide to rent desk space in order to improve their work life balance.

In addition, many traditional companies are still reluctant to outsource to home workers as a means of increasing cost efficiency because of the negative image the lack of their own substantial office space can give a business.
