JCT will launch eco-development contracts Joint Contracts Tribunal will publish eco-guidance terms this autumn to help construction firms improve their sustainability, it has been reported.

About 70 per cent of all contracts used on construction schemes will be affected by its advice on reducing waste and conserving energy.

"We owe it to future generations to ensure that the buildings we put up today protect the environment as far as possible – and at the same time are great places in which to live, work and have fun," said general secretary, Peter Hibberd.

Modern offices in London often incorporate elements of 'green' design, including central atriums that increase natural light and insulated glass that retains heat.

Mr Hibberd acknowledged the new contract provisions were unlikely to set actual limits on energy consumption, saying they were more to raise awareness and encourage green practices.

He added: "We have a huge opportunity to improve the sustainability performance of the construction industry."
