London’s commuters spend an average of 78 minutes on their daily commute, a new study finds – a total of around 12 full days per year. The study calls for more flexible working practices as a way to beat the number of problems associated with this daily burden on the travel infrastructure.
‘Rush hour’ - in reality, a prolonged stretch of congestion twice this time, either side of the working day – means that roads and railways are used inefficiently, bringing stress to millions of commuters and placing an increased burden on the environment. Flexible work, either in terms of time or place, could significantly reduce carbon emissions.
Streamlining car journeys would mean less waiting in slow-moving or stationary traffic, a major contributor to emissions, whilst home-working arrangements would reduce companies’ demands on office space, along with their associated heating and lighting costs.
