London mayor Boris Johnson has used his ‘call in’ powers for the first time since his election in May 2008.
Despite both the local council and English Heritage’s opposition to the plans for a 237-metre tower on the Isle of Dogs, Johnson approved the development – albeit at a price tag of £7 million, including a £4 million payment for Crossrail.
"This is a decision I have not taken lightly. However, the Columbus Tower proposal clearly meets the test of a planning application of major significance to the whole of London," Johnson stated. "Considerable sums will be invested to bring lasting benefits to the local community and therefore I have no doubt that this development must be allowed to go ahead."
The lower part of the 63-storey tower will contain office space, whereas the top half will house serviced apartments and hotel rooms.
