The British office is increasingly adopting a smart casual dress code, new research has found.
A study by development consultancy, The Aziz Corporation, has revealed only one in four employees is now required to wear a suit to work.
"Enforcing a suits-only dress code is seen as outdated and perhaps a little insular in an increasingly international workplace, an image which savvy modern companies want to steer clear of," advised chairman, Professor Khalid Aziz.
His results showed most businesses allow more casual dress on certain days, such as dress-down Fridays, and six out of ten offices have adopted a 'smart casual' dress code.
Despite this workers, he discovered, are still keen to keep up appearances: "Far from wishing they could get away with ripped jeans and T-shirts, most employees take their professional image at work very seriously and will dress smartly by choice."
According to government statistics there were 2.9 million manufacturing employee jobs in the three months to January 2008, the lowest figure since comparable records began.
