Smart meters help monitor business energy use New smart meters are being provided to business customers so they can monitor their energy costs.

Power company Opus, is working with energy data services company Bglobal, to supply 5,000 across the country and is offering them free to its customers.

"This is an essential step for customers wanting to reduce their costs through energy saving initiatives," said Charlie Crossley Cooke, managing director.

"The smart meters provide up-to-date meter reads which means that customers can have access to detailed information about their energy consumption."

Environmental group, the Carbon Trust, has praised smart meter technology. Its recent metering trial found that small and medium-sized enterprises could use meters for their office space and make significant energy savings.

Smart metering is used to collect data so firms can then implement energy saving measures and initiatives, however it is not yet widely available.
