Tower Hamlets Council has moved a step closer to redeveloping one of its council estates.
A decision by the government's culture minister, Margaret Hodge, not to list the Robin Hood Gardens estate as a building of special architectural significance, has allowed plans to proceed.
The council has planned to work with developer, English Partnerships, on plans for 3,000 homes, commercial property, shops, a school and parkland, Property Week has reported.
The current building was designed by husband and wife team, Peter and Alison Smithson. It has been classified as a 'brutalist' building because of the extensive use of concrete in its construction.
Ms Hodge said the reputation of the estate's designers did not outweigh evidence that "Robin Hood Gardens was not innovative" and "it is not fit for purpose", Building Design has reported.
The publication launched protests against the development supported by eminent architects Lord Rogers, Norman Foster and Zaha Hadid.
