Whitbread to build on commercial property sites Whitbread, the leisure group, is to announce it is to build nine new hotels on land set aside for commercial property, the Times has reported.

It will construct Premier Inn hotels at two London sites, one in Greenwich the other in Aldgate, where previously there would have been office or residential conversions.

"About a quarter of all opportunities put to us are former office or residential developments," said property director Mark Anderson.

Including these new sites, he hopes the group will offer more than 8,500 rooms in the capital in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Due to space shortages, the current trend is to build higher and higher - a move that is dramatically altering London's skyline.

Architects are also increasingly integrating green technologies in their designs. One Westminster Place, when completed will feature a central atrium, which opens up its interior to natural light.
