More has to be done to limit emissions from office ICT equipment, a celebrity eco-campaigner has urged.
Penny Poyzer, an author and broadcaster on green issues explained the amount of carbon emissions they are producing is "staggering".
"ICT equipment is staggering in terms of how much energy it consumes. It produces three to four per cent of the world’s carbon emissions, that’s ten per cent of the UK’s energy bill," she warned.
She made several recommendations, which could help workplaces to be more environmentally aware, including cutting printing costs and switching lights off.
"Its very simple stuff," she explained. "Also things like water coolers and vending machines – at the weekend these things dont need to be on."
Offices have also been encouraged to switch off unused lights or install timer switches.
According to the Carbon Trust, if a business was to reduce the amount of energy it used by 20 per cent, it could add the same amount to its profits as a five per cent increase in sales.
