London has seven separate builds shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award 2008.

The finalists include community centres, theatres, schools and Langdon Park DLR station.

"Good design in building matters. It helps to foster civic pride, it fires the imagination, and it’s something we’re very good at in this country," Gordon Brown noted.

"The public buildings and projects on this year’s shortlist are excellent examples of this."

Leading firms often seek out commercial property designed to the latest specifications, in style and sustainability.

The award is a category of the British Construction Industry Awards sponsored jointly by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment and the Office of Government Commerce.

Barking Learning Centre, St Marylebone CE School Performing Arts Centre and Cremorne Riverside Centre find themselves in competition with the National Theatre Studio, Royal Festival Hall and Young Vic.
