Alpha Coal Sales International is set to open offices in London.
The subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources, itself a major American coal producer, has taken the decision to open the office in a bid to build a platform from which to export coal.
Brian Sullivan, chief commercial officer at Alpha, stated that London was a financial centre for coal on a global level, and that having an office would position it much closer to this market, as well as enable it to increase the levels of local customer support it could provide.
Discussing the company’s plans further, in a written statement, he said: “Our intent is to build an export platform for US thermal coal that has long-term potential.
“This is another step in moving us further down the value chain as we continue our model of direct customer contact,” he added.
Continuing, Mr Sullivan, said: “Being closer to the end users of coal enhances our European platform and gives us greater visibility into the important API 2 (coal) export market.”
Alpha Natural Resources has a number of office properties across its native America – with its headquarters based in Bristol, Virginia, as well as other locations spread throughout West Virginia.
