Governing body of South Korean Port opens London office

Busan Port Authority (BPA) has opened a representative office in London.

The London office is the third worldwide for the South Korean governing body, but the first outside of Asia. Current offices are located in Tokyo and Shanghai.

BPA president, Ki-tack Lim said he was optimistic that the firm could use the new office as a springboard to strengthening relationships with European-based carriers and shippers.

Lim added: “London is a very good location from a strategic point of view. It gives us very good access to the rest of Europe. When it comes to major shipping lines, all of them are located in the European countries.

European trade is very important for the Busan Port Authority.

It is expected that Jimsun Shin, general manager of BPA’s Europe Representative Office, will discuss with the shipping lines how best to respond to changes in the shipping market.

Busan currently ranks as one of the biggest container ports in the world. It hopes to maintain its position through expanding both new and old ports over the coming years.

Plans are already underway for more berths to be added at Busan New Port and they are estimated to be completed by 2020.
