KONE wins lift and escalator contract for London office space

Engineering and servicing firm KONE has won a contract to supply and install lifts and escalators at Land Securities and Canary Wharf Groups’ new London office space.

The Finnish company will install four escalators and 14 double-deck eco-friendly lifts at the 37-storey building, 20 Fenchurch Street. Utilising KONE’s own technology, the lifts are expected to consume 50-70 per cent less energy than a conventional lift would; by taking these energy efficiency measures, Land Securities and Canary Wharf Group are thought to be aiming to achieve a BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) rating of “excellent.”

Executive director of Canary Wharf Group Contractors Limited, Cormac MacCrann commented on the decision to award the contract to KONE.

He said: “We are constantly challenging our suppliers to provide products that outperform users’ expectations and deliver better outcomes for the environment. KONE has stepped up to the plate on the 20 Fenchurch Street elevator contract. We look forward to working with them in the coming months to deliver London’s newest skyscraper.”

KONE UK’s managing director, Michael Williams,  also commented on the agreement, stating: “It is always a pleasure to work with developers who share our passion for creating an excellent people flow experience that is delivered in a sustainable way.”

The construction of 20 Fenchurch Street is set to be completed by 2014.
