The City of London is still the world’s leading financial centre, according to the chancellor of the exchequer, Alistair Darling.
He spoke at the annual banquet of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers and said that working together, the City and government could rise to the opportunities and challenges ahead.
The Master of the Company, Angus MacLennan called on bankers to re-emphasise the fundamentals of trust, integrity and honesty, which are so vital to their profession.
The company has more than 500 members from 250 firms and institutions. It aims to foster fellowship, charity, education and the promotion of trades and professions.
Canary Wharf is often seen as the City’s financial centre and despite facing a difficult period, there is continued interest from abroad in its commercial property.
A global credit crunch has made it more difficult for some firms to borrow money, although the capital continues to see property firms invest cash to purchase business premises.
