Developers are looking to integrate eco-roofs having accepted the need to use sustainable materials, Contract Journal has reported.
Vegetated roofs can help replace the natural environment removed as part of the build process. According to Phil Singleton, green roof product manager at Icopal, they have many qualities.
"Green roofs can dramatically reduce heat gain in a building," he said. "They act as a good insulator when they’re dry, but are less efficient when wet so it’s not an alternative to insulation, just an addition," he told the publication.
He went on to explain they also could help reduce the likelihood of flooding because "rainwater is withheld and released over a longer period of time".
Local authorities are keen to push developers to integrate eco-roofing on their commercial property developments and on both new build and refurbishment projects.
