A collection of large companies has stated its support for a code of environmental rules for new commercial property.
In a surprise move, the UK Green Building Council announced its backing for a Code for Sustainable Buildings – similar to the Code for Sustainable Homes that was announced at the end of 2006 – ahead of findings from the government’s own consultation process, which are due later in 2009.
Such a code would affect new office space and commercial property in London, as well as energy generation and other infrastructure development. The GBC property task group includes Lend Lease, Prologis and Legal & General Property.
The statement comes at a time when the downturn has pushed environmental concerns to the back burner for both government and businesses. Additional spending on green objectives is not a popular option at the moment, but increasing evidence for climate change is leading to widespread demand for urgent reform.
