Proposal at a 600,000 sq ft London office space? It must be The Shard

A man has used the grand opening of The View from The Shard to propose to his shocked girlfriend.

James Episcopou decided to use the event as the perfect setting for his proposal to girlfriend, Laura Taylor, admitting he had no idea that the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and a wave of media representatives would be there as well.

Mr Episcopou, 22, said: “I’ve had it planned since July last year. When tickets first came out I thought I’ve got to buy them, it’s the perfect place to propose. Laura means everything to me and I wanted to make her feel on top of the world.

“We had no idea the media were going to be there, but when we arrived we saw Boris Johnson and there were cameras everywhere.”

His new fiancée, Laura Taylor, 22, said: “I had no idea he had planned it. I thought we were going up to look at the view.

“James asked me to come over to him because some photographers would like to take our picture. The next moment he was on one knee and proposing. I was so shocked. I said ‘yes, definitely’, but then I was speechless.”

The couple were congratulated by wellwishers who had managed to grab tickets to the grand opening event – with almost 5,000 tickets sold in total.

Apart from the new tourist attraction, The View from The Shard, which opened to the public today, the skyscraper itself will offer 600,000 sq ft of prime London office space. A 200 room Shrangi-La hotel, a number of restaurants across three floors and ten luxury apartments are also part of the huge building.
