The coalition’s spending cuts are likely to mean a merger and relocation of two sporting bodies, UK Sport and Sport England. Both groups distribute National Lottery funding to sporting causes. UK Sport provides funds for Olympic and other promising athletes through the UK, while Sport England enables coaching and provides facilities for grassroots sporting activities in England alone.
After 2012, the groups may be asked to move to office space at the Olympic Park in Stratford. Sport England currently occupies expensive Central London office space, and is though to be paying around £49 per square foot for its substantial Bloomsbury headquarters. The space is reported to include a ‘break-out area’ the size of a tennis court.
Meanwhile the search continues for a long-term tenant for the Olympic stadium as part of the games’ legacy. The Olympic Park Legacy Committee have already received more than 100 approaches by interested parties.
